Assessment of your child’s vision include the following tests.
EYE HEALTH
A comprehensive examination of the health of the external and internal parts of the eye to ensure there are no signs of eye disease which might affect vision of your child’s eyes in general.
VISUAL ACUITY
This is a measure of the sharpness of sight as determined by the ability to see detail at far and near. 20/20 or 6/6 is a normal level of sight and we will advise you of the level of your child’s vision in relation to normal.
REFRACTION
This is a test of the power of the eye and measures the presence and degree of long sightedness, short sightedness (myopia) or astigmatism, which is a normal condition where the front surface of the eye is not exactly round in shape, and affects the clarity of focus.
EYE MOVEMENT SKILLS
We test the accuracy and ease of tracking eye movements which are necessary for moving along a line of print when reading, as well as jump eye movements where eyes are moved from one place to another. These are developed skills and are related to general motor and fine motor skills.
FOCUSING ABILITY
This refers to the ability to accurately change focus from the board to the book as in copying, and to maintain focus for reading and writing. Problems in focusing are very common and may affect the ability to sustain focus and concentration for reading, as well as affecting the speed and accuracy of changing from board to book when copying.
Visual Information Processing (Perception)
Tests are carried out to ensure your child has developed normal levels for his/her age of understanding of what they see. This tests vision perception which included skills of understanding shapes of letters, visual memory which relates to the ability to remember what he/she has seen before, and visual sequencing skills. Tests are also carried out of visual motor integration, which is the ability to use the eyes and the hands as a team for drawing and other eye hand activities.
